What is reproduction rate?

Reproduction rate is the relationship between an objects size in real life and its size on the image capturing medium (sensor or film). If a lens, such as this macro lens, offers a 1:1 maximum reproduction rate it means the lens can project an object on the sensor at life-size.  So, photograph a 1cm long bug, at 1:1, it will take up 1cm of your sensor. True macro lenses reproduce at least 1:1 – lenses that tout ‘close focusing’ typically sit around 1:3.
